Dear Colleague

During the initial wave of COVID-19, the DoH (NI) and HSCB authorised community pharmacies to close for one-hour over lunchtime to allow for the restocking and cleaning of premises and to give staff a break. This step was universally welcomed across the community pharmacy sector, and as we move to the next stage of COVID-19 and beyond the DoH(NI) and HSCB have reaffirmed their support to CPNI that pharmacies are able to continue with the one-hour lunch break.

For the one-hour period there is no obligation to provide commissioned services, including the dispensing of medicines, to the public. Contractors can choose to either close the entire pharmacy or to close just the dispensary for one-hour, with both options acceptable to HSCB.

With increasing demands being placed on professional staff the benefits of a one-hour break during the day will undoubtedly enhance staff health and wellbeing. This will also bring benefits to patient care.

We would hope this is viewed as a positive step and we welcome the commitment by DoH(NI) and HSCB to authorise this change to pharmacies contracted opening hours going forward.

Yours sincerely

Dear Colleague,

Further to Contractor Update #111 that was issued on 3rd July 2020 I wish to remind contractors that the HSCB online survey is still available at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TSXQ9DV

The closing date for completion of the survey is Friday 24th July 2020.  The survey aims to assess the respective position of each pharmacy with regards to service provision for the forthcoming year.  This is an important piece of work to inform service development work and planning over the coming weeks and months.  We would encourage you to give the questions within the survey your full consideration.

Yours sincerely

Dear Colleague,

Thank you to the respondents who completed the CPNI COVID survey, which was carried out in May 2020.  Please find attached a summary of the findings.

The survey clearly illustrates the exceptional response of the community pharmacy sector to the COVID pandemic.  This was due to the agility and responsiveness of community pharmacy contractors and their teams who rapidly adapted practice, in their determination to continue to provide patient-facing services and ensure the continuity in supply of essential medicines to patients.

The overall survey findings were shared with the HSCB and Department of Health and formed part of the negotiations for funding bids, which you will be aware, were successful.  The CPNI COVID survey also provided a basis for the current HSCB survey which aims to understand current capacity of the community pharmacy network.  The information gathered will help the service development team with ongoing planning and reintroduction of pharmacy services for the remainder of the 2020/21 year.

For information on the current HSCB Survey please see CPNI COVID19 ContractorUpdate #111 (3rd July).

Thank you again to you and your pharmacy teams for the dedication you continue to show to your local communities, through the current pandemic.

Yours sincerely

Dear colleague,

Please find attached correspondence from Joe Brogan HSCB and a report of medication incidents in primary and secondary care, in 2018.

The report includes information on the main types of medication incidents reported and the contributory factors which led to them occurring.  It also acts as a resource to raise awareness of good medication safety processes and systems which HSC organisations have implemented to support patient safety.  Key findings for community pharmacy can be found on page 50 of the report.

I would encourage you to read and share this report with your pharmacy team(s), to support good practice.

Yours sincerely
